There’s something wonderful about fall in Contra Costa County. The mornings are getting cooler, pumpkins are popping up on front porches, and our communities are filling up with seasonal activities.
Of course, fall also means getting things done around the house. There’s yard work, cleaning out the garage, putting away summer furniture, and preparing for the months ahead.
And sometimes, after a productive weekend, our backs remind us just how much we accomplished!
At Stojanovich Chiropractic in Walnut Creek, we want our neighbors to enjoy everything the season has to offer, from working in the garden to spending time with family and exploring our local communities.
Here are a few simple ways to take care of your body along the way.
1. Warm Up Before Tackling That Yard Work
It’s easy to head outside on a Saturday morning and immediately start pulling weeds, raking leaves, or trimming bushes.
But if you’ve spent much of your week sitting, suddenly jumping into several hours of physical activity can leave your muscles feeling overworked.
Before getting started, try walking around for a few minutes, gently moving your shoulders, and easing into your activities.
Think of it as giving your body a little time to get ready for the day.
And speaking of getting outside, fall is a great time to enjoy the local community. The season kicked off with the Walnut Creek Oktoberfest and the annual Clayton Oktoberfest, bringing neighbors together for music, food, and festivities.
Whether you’re working in the yard or walking around a festival, a little preparation and comfortable movement can make the day more enjoyable.
2. Be Mindful of How You’re Lifting
Fall cleanup often involves more lifting than we realize.
Bags of leaves, storage bins, gardening supplies, and outdoor furniture can all add up.
A few reminders:
- Keep heavier objects close to your body.
- Bend through your hips and knees rather than relying entirely on your back.
- Avoid twisting while carrying heavy items.
- Break larger loads into smaller ones.
- Ask for help when something feels too heavy or awkward.
And remember, just because you can carry everything in one trip doesn’t mean you should!
The same idea applies when you’re out enjoying seasonal activities.
If you’re heading to the Pleasant Hill Harvest Festival on October 10, take your time carrying purchases, pumpkins, or anything else you pick up along the way.
A little awareness of how you’re moving can be helpful, whether you’re at home or out having fun.
3. Take Breaks Before You’re Exhausted
Have you ever started a small project that somehow turned into an all-day adventure?
One minute you’re organizing a shelf, and the next thing you know, you’ve cleaned out the entire garage.
It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re busy.
Try taking regular breaks, changing positions, drinking water, and giving yourself time to rest between tasks.
You don’t have to accomplish everything in one afternoon.
And remember, staying active doesn’t always mean working hard.
Sometimes it’s as simple as strolling through the Concord Farmers’ Market at Todos Santos Plaza, picking up seasonal produce, and enjoying a little fresh air.
Movement can be part of everyday life, and it can be fun, too.
4. Listen to Your Body
A little muscle soreness after an unusually active day isn’t uncommon.
But there’s a difference between feeling like you’ve had a busy day and experiencing pain that continues, worsens, or interferes with your normal activities.
If something hurts while you’re working, stop and reassess what you’re doing.
If discomfort persists or you’re experiencing new symptoms, consider having them evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.
At Stojanovich Chiropractic, Dr. Nick Stojanovich evaluates concerns involving the spine and other joints, including the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles.
Every patient is different, and understanding what’s contributing to discomfort is an important part of determining appropriate care.
5. Make Time for the Things You Enjoy
We spend so much time thinking about everything we need to get done that sometimes we forget to make room for the things we actually enjoy.
And fall is a wonderful reminder to do just that.
For those who enjoy walking or running, the Lafayette Res Run for Education takes place on October 18, with opportunities for community members to participate while supporting local schools.
Later in the month, families can enjoy Lafayette’s Trick-or-Treat Street on October 30, another opportunity to get outside, walk around, and spend time together.
Whether it’s a community event, an afternoon in the garden, a walk with a friend, or playing with your grandchildren, these everyday experiences are part of what makes life meaningful.
And they’re worth taking care of yourself for.
